Retro Show 2017 Report
The Retro Show 2017 was a great success transporting us back to a bygone era with vintage vehicles in abundance; from mint originals to modified retros, we saw a varied and diverse congregation celebrating the UK’s classic car scene. The glorious British summer didn’t let us down with a scorcher of a day, blue skies and brilliant sunshine – we hope there aren’t too many burnt retro fans out there today! All you Dad’s that joined us this Father’s Day – we hope you had a fantastic day here with us at Santa Pod Raceway!
The first trophy of the day went to Dirk McLean, winner of the Autotest, completing the track in an impressive 22.30 seconds in his Austin Mini Clubman. Well done Dirk!
The Drift Arena was busy all day hosting The Retro Drifting Challenge where we witnessed the UK’s top retro drifters put on a sideways driving, tyre smoking, rubber burning extravaganza! 1st Dukes of Hafod, 2nd Daral JBR, 3rd Rusty Slider.
The Show Paddock hosted the Autoglym Show & Shine competition. We saw a ravishing retro spectacle from rare originals to modified classics. It was a tough decision for our judges with a couple of heated debates! We salute all of you who entered – you did us proud with top machinery throughout! However, after many turns around the paddock, I’m sure you’ll agree, the winners were as follows:
The track was busy all weekend with an array of retro vehicles out on the ¼ mile. We witnessed Drag Demos from Outlaw Flat Four including Richie Moss and Danny Pike in their VW Notchbacks plus popular Ford Escorts.
We were very excited to welcome Oklahoma Willy – The Jet Bus to Retro Show 2017. Showcasing its debut performance on the track, this very cool, beautifully presented VW camper hit the strip with a cheer! Joining the flame and thunder party, tearing up the raceway, we saw Martin Hill’s Fireforce 3 Jet Funny Car run at a breath-taking 5.9068 @ 271.53mph!
RWYB took centre stage seeing a varied and vibrant mix of retro vehicles, hitting the track with some very impressive ET’s. The results of the RWYB competition were as follows:
Class B – Over 2000cc without turbo/nitrous – Richard Denny – Pontiac Firebird – 11.1629 @ 123.06mph
Class D – Over 2000cc with turbo/nitrous –Robert Bentley (Bentley Boys) – Nissan Skydat GTR – 10.0176 @ 145.33mph
Supported by the Triumph Sports Six Club, we welcomed well over 200 cars to Triumfest this Retro Show. Back for the second year running we saw an awesome assembly of these British icons in the Triumfest UK Show & Shine paddock and club areas. A big thank you to the club for holding their annual event with us.
Despite the overwhelming heat, Cool Flo BMX lived up to their name and pulled out all the stops keeping the crowds entertained with their team of outstanding pro riders performing jaw-dropping demonstrations throughout the day.
We would like to thank everyone who attended Retro Show and from all the Santa Pod team, we hope you had a great day! See you next year!Photos courtesy DJ and Lis Croxen.
